To move from the Sukhumvit area to Khao San Road we took a taxi from our hotel to the canal. We only had to wait a few minutes for a boat heading in our direction and we struggled on with our bags. About half way into the journey the driver lowered the roof on the boat and we had to crouch down. Soon after, we passed under a very low bridge and the boat fitted perfecty underneath. Once we were through the driver moved the roof back to full height. We had to change boats once and were a bit unsure where we should get off. When we reached a stop where everyone got off we decided it was probably the right place. Fortunately it was, and after a fifteen minute walk we got to Khao San Road.

As we were arriving in the area on New Year's Eve I had booked us a room at the Sawasdee Bangkok Inn, which is in a peaceful Soi just off Khao San Road. We paid for three nights in advance as then you get the third night for less than half price. We then headed out to celebrate. The road was full of people and some ferris wheels had been set up for the night. Towards midnight it was incredibly busy and after the countdown we could see fireworks from a display on the river.
