Port Macquarie
By Sheila - Australia - 14 Sep/03 - Viewed 3034 times.

Port Macquarie is a beautiful place with numerous unspoilt and empty beaches. The town is clean and tidy and the surrounding country side picturesque.

We stayed at The Telegraph Retreat about 18 km north in a custom built cottage for 2. It had every luxury you could want including a hot spa on the veranda. Breakfast is included and other food is available at cost if you wish to cook.

On the way out that night we caught sight of a pair of kangaroos hoping across the road in our headlights. Apparently they are more likely to be seen at dawn and dusk.

We went to eat at the Whalebone Warf fish restaurant. The menu is extensive but we were hard pushed to find something that didn't include king prawn. Even the steak comes with king prawn. In the end we chose Wild Barramundi which was a nice soft white fish and was served on a bed of (barely) cooked vegetables.

There was no potato so it was just as well we had ordered some bread.

We had a choice of 3 - having no idea what any of them were we chose a Damper because it was the cheapest.

Most restaurants apparently close on Mondays so the next night we stayed in and John cooked from the fridge. Our first night in for 4 weeks!

We had another senior moment when we checked out. We had driven 25k up the Pacific Highway before we realised we hadn't given in the key so we had to turn around and take it back!
